Every good photographer has their own line up of essentials. Once you have a feel for what you are doing you might not want to carry some of these things.
Until then this is my list of camera bag must haves:
1. Camera - Seems obvious but never underestimate what a good camera can do for you out look on life!
2. Batteries - There is nothing worse then being on a shoot, having your battery die and having to go into a gross public bathroom to find a plug to get a quick charge. Not to mention your client will start second guessing you. Bring plenty of batteries, of all kinds (Camera batteries, batteries for your flash, batteries for remotes)!
3. Lenses - bring on of every kind. Telephoto, wide angle, macro, etc. I know they cost a lot so don't fret if you have on of each, but make sure that you have what you need to complete the job. The only way to determine what you need is to experiment before hand.
4. Extra lens cap - Just do it, trust me.
5. Flashlight - You might only ever need it once but that one time you do you will be so glad you have it. That little extra light in a dark scenario can save the shoot from total disaster, especially in close up situations.
6.Memory cards - no justification needed.
7. Multi tool - I cannot tell you how many times I have needed a knife to cut branches, a screw driver to fix a park bench, and a file to fix a finger nail. You will not regret having one on hand.
8. Tape - I have had batteries fall on the ground, brides dresses slip, and backdrops fall down. Nothing a little tape coin; not fix though.
9. Reflectors - If you can find a good five in one reflector set, buy it fast. This is the best thing you can have on a shoot. Before you use it though make sure you know how to use it.
If you have something that you think needs to be added let me know!
I always like to hear how to avoid a disaster!
